The Tampa Organization for Black Affairs (TOBA), founded in 1979, is Tampa Bay’s largest African American nonprofit organization. As a leadership organization, their goal is to empower young African American leaders in the community, as well as educate and prepare future generations. TOBA’s programs are intended to promote societal, educational, political, and economic understanding in every aspect of their community. One way they work to achieve this goal is by hosting their Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Leadership Breakfast.
The MLK Leadership Breakfast is an annual event that honors the core principles advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These principles aim to nurture positive relationships that help foster education and growth within the community. As TOBA’s largest annual event, attendees range in the thousands, consisting of corporate sponsors, politicians, grass-root organization leaders, and members of the surrounding community. The program itself, features an influential keynote speaker and holds an awards ceremony to honor those who have had a positive impact on the Tampa Bay community.

Our Approach
TOBA’s 41st MLK breakfast was a unique live stream event that required extensive behind-the-scenes planning and production. Attendance for this breakfast ranges in the thousands and with COVID-19 still being a concern, livestreaming the event was the perfect option. Partnering with multiple leaders within TOBA, our six week pre-production started with filming a commercial to promote the event. The commercial was sent to various agencies, media outlets, and used for additional marketing opportunities.
The livestream was an intermingling of all aspects of production. This four hour event required three cameras with audio production to capture the organization’s presentations, the keynote speaker, the award ceremony, entertainment, and various presenters. Our team broadcasted music in between segments and throughout the event and was also responsible for event photography.
What truly made this event exceptional was our ability to produce participant interaction in real time. With using the WHOVA app to livestream, participants were able to comment during the event, and we would respond accordingly. Being able to allow for virtual guest interaction, reply instantaneously during this livestream, and continue to cut in between multiple live camera angles, speakers, and presentations, made TOBA’s leadership breakfast a resounding success.
